Christmas—a Divine Invasion

The fascination with astronomy and space goes back to historical beginnings. Job, probably the oldest book in the Bible, speaks of the constellations of Orion and Pleiades, etc. Even at the birth of Jesus, the wise men came to Jerusalem seeking the “King of the Jews,” saying, “for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.” (Matt. 2:2) The “star” revealed to them that a Heavenly Visitor had invaded earth. What was this all about?
It all began with God’s creation of Adam and Eve who were placed in a perfect environment called Eden. (cf. Gen.1&2) They had access to anything their heart could desire, including God’s presence and fellowship. One tree was “off-bounds,” by which the Lord tested their love and obedience. When tempted by the Serpent (Satan) to eat of that fruit, they yielded to the flesh, and disobeyed. The consequence was death—separation from God’s life. Their sinful act brought sin and perpetual death upon the whole human race. “The wages of sin is death,” explaining why all people eventually die. There’s no problem bigger than that!
The Bible says that “The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand and seek God;” What did He see? “They are all together become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.” (Psa.14:2, 3) As Paul puts it, “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” (Rom.3:12) What a sight for the Holy God who initially made man to reflect His glory! What could be done?
In mercy, God instituted the Sacrificial system; i.e. the blood of innocent animals was shed to “cover” man’s sins. (cf. Lev.16). This became the means of forgiving the guilty, until the ultimate Sacrifice (Jesus Christ) was offered at the Cross. This practice continued until “the fulness of time was come,” and the Savior Himself appeared.
Yes, God looked down from Heaven and saw the utter corruption of mankind; but then He came down via the Virgin Mary, who conceived the Babe by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Matt. 1:20) The Christ Child was the perfect Son of God, not having the DNA (i.e. corrupted blood cells, etc.) of either Joseph or Mary. As prophesied by Isaiah, “Behold a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a Son, and they shall call His Name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” (Matt. 1:23) God came down from Heaven and dwelled among us! Jesus said, “I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any man eat of this bread, he shall live forever.” (Jno. 6:51) This portrays  the heart of Christmas!
But that’s not all. The One who looked down, and came down, was the One who lay down; i.e. He gave His life to redeem (deliver) sinners. “I am the good shepherd,” said Jesus, “…and I lay down my life for the sheep.” (Jno. 10:14, 15) Because of His absolute sinlessness, He was able and willing to become the ultimate and complete Sacrifice for all sinners. John the Baptist rightly identified Him as “the Lamb of God who taketh away the sins of the world.” (Jno. 1:29)
Thankfully, it didn’t end there. For the One who looked down, and came down, and lay down, didn’t stay down! When sin’s penalty was paid, and Jesus’ body was buried, that pit of death could not hold Him! As He predicted, “I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself; I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again.” (Jno. 10: 17, 18)
This is exactly what happened on the third day after His crucifixion! Upon their approach to the tomb on that Resurrection morn, the perplexed disciples were confronted by two men in “shining garments,” who said, “Why seek ye the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen.” And so it is—He’s Alive! He’s Alive forevermore! Hallelujah!
But there’s more. This resurrected Lord returned to Heaven, sent the Holy Spirit to continue His work in and though His disciples. One day, hopefully soon, He will invade our space again when He comes to catch up His Bride (the Church). Cf.1Thess. 4:13-18. Eventually, He will come back to this earth as the Glorious King, to rule and reign over His Millennial Kingdom. Cf. Psa. 2; Isa. 9:6, 7.
Meanwhile, Christmas is another opportunity to celebrate the Savior’s invasion to earth to “save His people from their sins.” It’s time to ask ourselves, “Have I allowed Him to “invade” my life personally? I’m sure we’ll agree that we’ve been side-tracked by the “Santa syndrome,” and need to return to the real “reason for the season.” Let’s not permit a Christ-rejecting world to “invade our space,” in its attempt to make this precious celebration meaningless.

A Broader View of ‘Identity Theft’

In this age of technology, there has been great concern for maintaining one’s private identity. The epidemic of stolen credit cards, hacking personal information from internet accounts, etc. is common knowledge. In spite of annual notices of the “privacy act,” assuring folks of the safety of their personal records, it’s clear that individual privacy is almost a thing of the past. The Social Security card was once a strictly personal matter, making us unique individual citizens; but that scenario has changed, making us just another “number” whereby our most personal records now become public knowledge. The present thrust toward socialized medicine and health care further exposes our privacy, and limiting our individual responsibility for health care. The scheme is to have the government supply and thus control the medical industry. For the government to “confiscate” our medical records, it to ultimately place the citizenry under Federal control. No matter how you look at it, our identity is being stolen, and we are becoming “wards of the state.” We’ve been “had!” The “institution of slavery” is returning to America, only this time the format is more insidious and subtle.
On a deeper and more emotional level, this whole concept of “identity crisis”    has been with us from the beginning of history. Human beings have always had a problem with “low self-esteem” and inferiority. Before the widespread accessibility to “mental health” counseling, parents played that role in the midst of strong family units; children and young people were exposed to wise instruction and personal discipline. The primary reason that “socialism” and the concept of a “classless society” is rising in America, finds its root in the rejection of God’s creation in favor of evolution. If we all “evolved” from some “lower” form, then who are we? Are we just another “animal?” What is our “identity”—what makes us special and unique? There’s no answer to that question in the scheme of evolution. In fact, any specific hope and salvation in the future is also dashed to pieces. A godless theory has become a devious instrument to steal our God-given identity! These are strong words, but it’s time to face the truth.
One of the unique factors that have made America great is its Judao-Christian heritage. While not a “Christian nation” per/se, our forefathers gave more than lip service to the Bible. Not only were its precepts found in the religious community, but in the judicial and educational system. In light of the present attitude toward the Bible, it’s astounding to know that the first institution of higher learning was founded on the Word of God. Harvard College was launched in 1636 in Massachusetts for the purpose of training ministers of the Gospel of Christ. The same was true with the founding of Yale, Princeton, Brown, Dartmouth, etc. This tells us something of the mindset of the original colonies, and speaks to the clear identity and success of our nation. This also explains the individual ruggedness and stalwart character often cited by historians. Without excusing our own failures and corruption, this solid foundation clearly identifies the reason for the American dream, which has been unsurpassed by any other nation.
The “Progressives” (Socialists) who have grown in power over the last century, hate to be reminded of our national “identity.” This rejection of our Biblical foundation explains the downplaying and/or omission of the U.S. History curriculum in our public schools. Added to that is the removal of the Bible, and the fight against the true meaning and open display of Christmas and Easter. That’s why “Happy Holidays” is all but replacing “Merry Christmas.” The traditions that have fortified our uniqueness are now being overrun by unbiblical and left-winged forces, all under the guise of “tolerance.”
Significantly, those who preach “tolerance” are totally intolerant of the traditions that have not only made our country great, but a blessing to the whole world. Who has shown more compassion to the needy people across the globe than the USA? That which has readily identified us in the past is being minimized and “stolen!”
It’s time-- if there is time, to “wake up,” the bell is ringing! The “thieves” are at the door!

Thanksgiving and The Will of God

I’ve been asked many times by young believers and others, “How can I know the will of God for my life?” While the Bible addresses every issue of life by principle, it doesn’t give “chapter and verse” on specific details. For instance, it doesn’t give the name and address of one’s future spouse or place of employment. But it does reveal attitudes and practices which please God, and place one in the way for future direction and success.
One example is found in 1Thess. 5:18, “In everything gives thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus, concerning you.” Thanksgiving is more than an annual Holiday; it’s to be an on-going attitude of gratitude to the believer. “Thanks-living” would be more in line with the “will of God.” Notice that the verse says, “In everything give thanks,” not necessarily for everything. We’ve all gone through difficult times, without the sense of God’s presence. But faith says, “I know all these things are working together for good, and for God’s purpose.” (Rom. 8:28) It doesn’t make any difference how much pain and suffering is involved. The ultimate example is found in the agonizing Savior’s cry in Gethsemane, “O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.” (Matt. 26:39)
It’s interesting that in the Bible thanksgiving is considered a “sacrifice of praise.” In light of Christ’s redeeming Cross-work, the Old Testament animal sacrifices became extinct. Christ Himself became the Lamb, who forever “takes away sin.” Now the believer is identified with Christ through His death, burial, and resurrection. The debt of man’s sin has been paid in full, so that now the believer becomes a witness to that fact. (Acts 1:8) As Heb. 13:15 exhorts, “By him (Christ)…let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.”
Since we are naturally an unthankful people, how does one become thankful? The basic answer lies in the “new birth,” where a lost sinner by faith in Christ becomes a new creature. (2Cor. 5:17) As mentioned above, he enters into Christ’s death, and the power of His resurrection. This new life, by the Holy Spirit, produces an “attitude of gratitude,” and the ability to “rejoice always” becomes reality. (cf. Phil.4:4-6) This goes hand-in-hand with thanksgiving, and fulfils the “will of God.”
Finally, let’s consider the basic meaning of the word “thanksgiving.” The original word is eucharist; it is comprised of eu, meaning “well”, and charis, meaning “grace or gift.” (The word “charismatic” is derived from this root) So a thankful person is literally “well-graced,” or filled with grace. But that’s not all, within the root charis is chara, meaning “joy.” So one who is thankful is not only “well-graced,” but is “well-joyed;” i.e. filled with “joy unspeakable and full of glory!”
Only those filled with grace and joy can truly be thankful to the glory of God. Most people are filled with self, unable to see the ongoing handiwork of God in their lives. Bellyachers are never thankful. Life “under the sun” is mundane at best; only those who live “above the sun” in the Son can rejoice in His grace. May God give us an “epidemic” of such people!
It just crossed my mind that someone close to me fills this bill---my beautiful granddaughter. Significantly, her name is Charis Joy; and as a young lady she exudes the very essence of “thanksgiving.” I humbly thank God for giving her the qualities of her name sake, “grace and joy,” which in turn project an “attitude of gratitude.”
This is the starting place in finding the ‘will of God” for our lives. A thankful heart puts us in the way of God’s blessing and direction (cf. Prov.3:5&6). If we stay on that “road,” it will always lead us to the right place.

Do Atheists ‘Worship’?

Evidently they do, according to recent reports of the tremendous rise of “atheist mega-churches” across the world. How can this be when by common definition an “atheist” is one who does not believe in God? The agnostic is one who questions God’s existence and, for the most part, simply ignores the issue. But not so with atheists, who have become increasingly aggressive and even militant in recent years.
Significantly, Madalyn Murray O’Hair, the crusading atheist in the 1960s, was responsible for removing the Bible and prayer from the public school arena. The results of that “legislation” have brought devastating consequences on our nation to this day. Amazing how someone not believing in God could be so intent in removing God’s Word from the public work place! If she “didn’t believe in God,” why make an issue about it? Why not just let “believers” alone? Ironically, her own son, Bill, became a Christian and later a Biblical evangelist.
It’s interesting how aggressive atheists can be with their message of “unbelief.” This is evidenced by their prominent spokesman, Richard Dawkins, who is considered the outstanding atheistic “evangelist” of our day. In his book, The God Delusion, he expounds his thesis of the irrationality and harm caused through “belief in God.” It’s obvious that he’s serious about his “Godless faith,” and intent on “preaching” it. How bizarre is this scenario?
Now we have some idea as to why atheistic “churches” are springing up worldwide. They are copying the format of Christian congregations, with “rousing music, an inspirational sermon, a reading, and some quiet reflection. The only thing missing is God,” says an AP release. The Sunday Assembly, as it’s called, embraces the motto, “Live Better, Help Often, Wonder More;” further, it “taps into that universe of people who left their faith but now miss the community church provided,” said Pitzer College Professor Phil Zuckerman.
This movement is spearheaded by two British comedians (no joke!), Sanderson Jones and Pippa Evans, who are presently touring the U.S. and Australia raising “donations” to launch new assemblies. They don’t “bash believers,” but want to find a “new way” to engage in community life, and “make their presence more visible…” Jones got the idea while leaving a Christmas carol concert six years ago. He relates, “There’s so much about it (concert) that I loved, but it’s a shame because at the heart of it, it’s something I don’t believe in.” He then extolled the church, and its singing of “awesome songs, hearing interesting talks, thinking about improving yourself and helping other people…What part of that is not to like?”
I am somewhat enamored by this whole development. Some may not “believe” that godless atheists are seeking a “faith” of their own choosing. But this scenario proves that every human being is born with the desire to seek the Creator. God has placed the “light” of conscience into every human being, which can be ignored, hardened, or rightly utilized. Bottom line: I’m convinced that there are no “atheists,” just those who are in denial. This “mega-church” movement proves that! If there’s no God, then why do they keep “pushing” their “unbelief?” What are they really saying?
If it were not for this sense of right and wrong in the human soul, there would be no system of justice. There would be no anticipation of a future accountability or judgment before the Creator. I think that atheism, along with evolution’s denial of God’s creation, is attempting to stamp out God-consciousness, so as to escape the validity of morality. Yet, atheists are “trying to be good” like other “believers;” How come? I say, “It’s built in!”
It must also be said that there are many so-called “Christians” in “mega-church” settings that need to reevaluate their “faith.” Is it possible that many are swept up with the “assembly program” and not with Jesus Christ Himself? How many practicing “atheists” are there among “professing” Christians? Is it possible to be an “unbelieving believer?” Just asking.

A Case of Judicial Success

The verdict is in! The jury is recommending that Louis Mann “serve the rest of his life behind bars for murdering his parents two years ago.” This was met with varied reactions, for some wanted the death penalty, which would have been warranted; others wanted imprisonment with possibility of parole in 25-30 years. Two “expert” psychologists with faulty evidence tried the “mental illness” and insanity route. But the jury spoke.
Some two years ago, I wrote a Tribune column called “Life is Fragile, Handle with Care.” My thoughts were instigated by the above incident where the precious lives of Philip and Frances Mann were brutally snuffed out by their rebellious son. In a “fit of rage,” he strangled his mother with a clothesline, and “took 31 years of rage out” on his father’s head with a flashlight! My concern at the time was that true justice be served for this horrendous crime, without being explained away by the “mental health” profession. I said the following:
“Let’s put the blame where it belongs. May the court have clear wisdom, and may there be proper closure, especially for a grieving family. Moreover, may we be spared from the defense’s attempt to blame the deceased parents or society for some imperfection which would justify such a travesty.”
Interestingly, that’s exactly what happened, propounded by two “psychologists” who didn’t know the parents, and on hearsay tried the “sex molestation card” to excuse the defendant. They were willing to accuse and slander the deceased parents who could not defend themselves. I guess, that’s what they got paid for---that’s shameful! Thankfully, both Trumbull County Prosecutors Chris Becker and Gabe Wildman, challenged the disingenuous findings of these psychologists; Wildman questioned the validity of Dr. Fradkin’s fees, while Becker took issue with the well-worn “mental illness” defense; he later commented, “I do remember…when a sin was a sin and not a psychological disorder.” Good for him!
In my opinion, this case was a judicial victory. Of course there’s no way to undo what’s happened; it’s done. But there’s some redeeming value to consider. I commend Judge W. Wyatt McKay for his leadership and expertise in seeing this case through. How blessed we are in this Warren community to have judges that truly deserve the title “Your Honor.” Hats off to the prosecution team who diligently pursued justice and closure. It’s good to know that we have prosecutors with integrity and tenacity, who are dedicated to finding truth. As lawlessness and rebellion continue to rise in our country, effective and fair verdicts of justice will become more difficult and sparse.
That leads me to Mr. Louis Mann himself. While in no way excusing his hideous crime, I must commend him for “manning up” to what he did. When I previously addressed this crime, I thought Louis would take the “not guilty” plea, and lay that extra forensic burden on the court. After all, who pleads “guilty” anymore for anything? At least, he faced the situation and verdict squarely. He told the court that before killing his parents, he was a “druggie, a loser, and a bad father.” Some would use that testimony to explain or justify his crime; but those actions were his fault, no one else’s; they were results of sinful behavior, rather than causes; like bad fruit growing on a tree with bad roots. Evidently Mr. Mann faced this situation for what it was, and found the remedy for his sinful condition.
After Jail Chaplain John Russell’s report on Mann’s “Christian conversion,” I can hear someone saying, “Yea, he got that ‘jailhouse religion.’” The inference being that it’s a phony “escape hatch from Hell.” But in reading Russell’s account, there seems to be a serious “turn-around” in Mann; other inmates testify that Louis is not a “holy-roller,” but a serious Bible student, demonstrating new “fruit.” It must be said, that Mann has no intent of “escaping” jail time, but expects the worse. “I’m never going to be free. I’ll be in a cell 23 hours a day until I get executed,” he said. His personal sin is forgiven in Christ; his debt to society for his crime must still be paid.
One might ask, “Does God forgive murderers?”  The Cross of Christ covers all sin, evidenced by the criminal who hanged beside Him. That thief cried out for the Lord’s forgiveness and salvation, but still paid for his crime by crucifixion (death). (cf. Luke 23) The potential sin of murder lurks in every human heart; but acting it out makes it a crime or civil offense. Mann’s internal “rage” (sin) was manifested openly in the act of killing his parents. That constituted a crime, thus being subject to the appropriate penalty of the Law.
Interestingly, Mr. Mann’s inner sense of conviction, along with God’s forgiveness, has inspired him to pay the price for his horrible crime. Hopefully Louis will experience inner “freedom,” while imprisoned for many years in a tiny prison cell. Irreparable damage and heartache still remain, but, thankfully, justice has been served.

Does Obama Really Care?

Does Obama Really Care?

The “Obamacare” production of so-called “affordable health act” has saturated the daily news these days. Proving more to be “unaffordable” health insurance, our country is facing serious medical challenges. A growing number of wage-earners, I understand, are losing their private coverage, or being shackled by inflated deductibles and “out of pocket” fees. At the same time, those who are jobless and/or indigent, etc. can go to the ER with a “hang nail” and receive free medical care. There’s something wrong with this picture.
Does President Obama, and his regime, really care that everyone has medical access? I doubt that, especially when under our present system no one with a legitimate need is turned away from the emergency room. No one will deny that our medical system has room for improvement, but that’s not what’s going on here. There’s a deeper and more subtle scheme in play here by political ideologs, who hide behind the “caring” façade.
In his campaign for the presidency, Mr. Obama promised to “change” America. I assume that most folks really didn’t know his definition of “change.” We all wanted a stronger economy, etc., and what a shocker it was to realize that this president’s desire was really to make our republic a gigantic, socialistic state. Not working alone, he took advantage of a growing trend toward government dependence. This has been spawned by a lazy, immoral segment of society that has lost its way; now almost 50% of Americans receive some government assistance. A growing number of folks have figured out that they can do better financially through government aid, than by working for a living. This is not what our forefathers had in mind.
Obamacare is part of a ploy to promote government control over the populace. The “haves” will have to give to the “have nots,” until the “haves” don’t have anything. This attempt to “level the playing field” is leading to a “classless society,” one of the classic tenets of Communism. They know that whoever controls the pocketbook (economy) and the healthcare system controls the citizenry. Sounds like “slavery” to me.
In my opinion, we have a “Chicago thug” in the Whitehouse who is dedicated to destroying America as we’ve known it. Motivated by an insidious and distorted ideology, and bolstered by like minded cronies, he will defend and promote his socialistic agenda with no regard for truth. He’s a master in the art of “casuistry”---which is defined as “reasoning that is specious (apparently right), misleading, or oversubtle.” (Collins English Dictionary) Simply put, “the end justifies the means;” whatever it takes to achieve one’s goal is justified; therefore, misleading statements, bald-faced lies, etc. are of no consequence, so long as the desired purpose is consummated.
This left-winged agenda has been effective in a country that has lost its moral compass. After all, there’s no right or wrong anymore, is there? Undermining the Bible, the Constitution, and legislative authority is the order of the day, becoming almost a virtue.
In his recent article, “Is there a way out,” economist Walter Williams, labels the government entitlement program as “legalized theft.” Congress is “taking the earnings or property of one American to give to another, to whom it does not belong.”  The government has no funds or resources of its own; therefore, we are faced with the reality that “the only way Congress can give one American one dollar is to first—through intimidation, threats, and coercion—confiscate that dollar from some other American through the tax code.”
This “hand out” mentality has become epidemic. It is rapidly leading to levels of federal spending that are “unsustainable.” But who cares? As long as folks receive the “goodies,” why sweat it? Liberal politicians make their re-election bid by playing Santa Claus, promising “freebies” that don’t belong to them. How would a presidential candidate fare if he declared, as James Madison did in 1794, “Charity is no part of the legislative duty of government?”
Williams concludes that if we’re to avoid ultimate collapse, it’s going to take “a moral reawakening and renewed constitutional respect—not by politicians but by the American people.” Could this be an economist’s way of saying, “we can’t fix this thing without Divine intervention?”
It’s clear that we need an invasion of Truth into the hearts of a decadent, violent, and ungodly society. God’s blessing upon our nation has been evident, especially when His Word, the Bible, was revered; but now we are facing judgment, and our leaders are powerless to remedy the problem. I think it’s time to acknowledge our sinful pride and plead for God’s mercy. It’s time for our national motto, “In God we trust,” to be stamped not only on our coins, but on our hearts. Let the “turn-around” begin!

Anger--the Dominate Force on Internet Communication

Anger—the Dominate Force on Internet Communication

You would expect that most “tweets” would be expressions of love and appreciation toward one another, right? Wrong! At least that’s the finding of a new study of the Chinese social network Weibo; that’s a platform resembling Twitter and boasting “twice as many users.” They conclude that the most “influential emotion in online interactions” is anger. What does this reveal about the social media, and why it seems easier to “rage” at a screen than directly to a person?
Beihang University researchers examined 70 million Weibo “tweets” over six months; they were sorted into the emotional categories of “anger, joy, sadness, and disgust.” While sadness and disgust didn’t appear to trigger sympathetic response, happy tweets did instigate joyful responses among its recipients. But interestingly, rage or anger was most prevalent, creating a ripple effect of negativity; i.e. one angry message sparked the same emotion in the recipient, who in turn spread the venom to still others.
Some have implied that this phenomenon reveals China’s Media mindset as opposed to Western twitter community. The study team seems to view this as a way to explain how “societal unrest spreads in China.” But this situation is more profound and universal than the political and cultural behavior of two Continents.
What’s the concern here? Evidently there’s a fear of an epidemic of anger across the Globe, where myriads of people will negatively influence multitudes. In fact, psychologists have known for some time that “moods spread from person to person.” In fact, this correlation is so powerful in social media, that studies have likened online emotions to “infectious disease.” What about that? This implies that one angry person can wreck the mood and well-being of another. Think of the untold damage that’s already been done in the domestic arena, and still spreading. Rather than “domestic tranquility” capturing our daily news, it’s a constant barrage of family anger and violence.
By the same token, the more presence one has on social media, the more powerful is the potential effect. The power-hungry and diabolical Adolph Hitler spread his “Third Reich” propaganda to every German without internet access! Such people still lurk in the shadows of society, propagating their venom across the planet with lightening speed. The coming prophetic world- dictatorship of the “Anti-Christ,” the epitome of evil, no longer defies explanation. Technology, while neutral in itself, will be used in a reign of political and religious terror. That’s scary!
Researchers have long been concerned about “the Internet’s ability to magnify negative emotions.” It must be quickly said that the Internet has no such “ability” in and of itself. Just like the computer slogan, “garbage in, garbage out,” indicates some human at the keyboard. So an angry person is sure to reveal himself, especially if his “tweet” is anonymous. The study further showed that feelings of stress, anxiety, and anger were acted out more intensely and frequently online than would be the case in person. This is significant.
The implications of this study are far-reaching in understanding human nature. Psychologists seem content in relegating their science to “behavior;” but the word “psychology” really means “a study of the psyche” (soul or mind). A person does what he does because of what he is in his heart. A happy heart produces happy behavior; but a rebellious and angry heart will be acted out accordingly. This study bemoans the fact that so many people “feel more comfortable being angry online than they do in person, and anger is more likely to spread among users than any other emotion.”
The only “remedy” given by this Chinese study is “to reexamine our online habits and perhaps change them for the better.”  That might be good advice if we could change our rebellious nature. Granted, anger over injustices can be a good response, but that’s not the thrust of this study. Having taught psychology for a number of years, I have never seen a textbook that addresses the nature of man. On the other hand, God’s “psychology” text, the Bible, says “the heart is deceitful, and desperately wicked, who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9) Cain, the first baby born, murdered his brother Abel in a fit of rage! (Genesis 4) The rest is history.
Yes, feelings of anger spread more rapidly than love      , especially when there’s no accountability. It’s been said that more wounds have been afflicted by the edge of the tongue than by the edge of the sword. One day, words spoken in secret, will “be shouted from the rooftops.” Future accountability is inevitable.
Changing one’s nature or heart is impossible to man, but not to God. The Messiah came on the first Christmas to make that change possible by His sacrificial death on the Cross. (John 3:16) Thankfully, the personal reality of hope and love is still possible in an angry world.

The Real Cure for Racism

The Real Cure for Racism

This is an open response to Steve Strang of Charisma Magazine. The subject of his article in the Strang Report is “Racial Reconciliation Movement Kicks Into High Gear.” It deals the racial stir in Sanford, FL over the Zimmerman-Trayvon Martin case. As a result, a diverse group of Christian ministers and leaders have drafted “The Sanford Declaration,” which calls for “racial reconciliation, relationship, and Christian cultural reform.”

Steve:
I think that the pursuit of this "Zimmerman-Trayvon" event in Florida is wedging a further division between the races. Other recent killings, like the murder of the Aussie in CO by blacks, could argue from the opposite side. Where will it end? Whether a man is black or white, he's still is responsible to God. The issue is not "skin" but sin! (That statement was made years ago by a black preacher)
White people can't live under guilt because of past atrocities against blacks, including slavery. After all, we weren't there to "vote!" It's time that we all stand up and take responsibility for our lives, regardless of race, economic background, etc. Why is there no "affirmative action" for Koreans or Asian Indians? I've lived among blacks for most of my life, and today I work with multi-ethnic men from the inner city, whose greatest need is salvation in Christ. Regardless of color, each man is the same size at the foot of the Cross!
One black man told me that he was thankful for slavery which brought his ancestors to America. They had a benevolent "master" who ended up giving his family 60 acres of land, most of which is still in their possession today. That's the side of the story that's never told. No one condones the atrocious behavior of many slave owners, but there's an upside to that piece of history. The Biblical Book of Philemon sheds light on this subject.
Even under the "Jim Crow" days of segregation, there were strong black families who raised their children in the fear of God and His Word. While white ministers increasingly denounced the Bible, black preachers continued to proclaim truth of sin and salvation. In fact, the Church owes a debt of gratitude to these godly Black pastors who helped stem the floodtide of liberalism and apostasy in America.
What's happened to that mentality now that we're "free?" We even have a black president, who represents the progress of the black caucus in America; yet 73% of black babies are born out of wedlock, and the so-called fathers are basically AWOL, leaving the tax-payers to foot the bill. There's something morally wrong with that picture. Let it also be said that the same trend exists in the white community, revealing a deeper issue than race.
We've been lied to by politicians and clergy alike. The "race-baiters," like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, should know better, if they're really men of "the cloth."  The power of the true Gospel of Christ can do more for "civil rights" than any attempt to "unify" the races by conventions and covenants. Indeed, we are candidates for a Sovereign, Heaven -sent invasion by the Holy Spirit similar to the "Great Awakening" of 1730 in New England. Lord, do it again for Your glory and our good!

Sincerely,
Bill Finnigan

Have We Lost Our Conscience?

It’s not uncommon for my wife and me to travel back roads on a trip, not only for a change of scenery, but to test our sense of direction. We do have GPS capability in our vehicle, but enjoy the challenge of just using the compass. It has never failed to point North, and has saved the day when it appeared that we were absolutely lost in the maze of country roads.
Thankfully, there is a standard of true direction. This is the case in the spirit of every human being. It’s called a conscience—that inner light or divine voice, which witnesses right from wrong. It’s that mystical, God-given feature that hopefully was trained in infancy, and developed in childhood. A century ago, school curriculums included the McGuffey Reader whereby children could learn to read, while training their conscience with moral truth. Eventually these forms of literature were removed, including the Bible itself, and the results in society are now evident.
I was particularly interested in the “uproar” regarding a recent indecent performance by Miley Cyrus of Hanna Montana fame. This so-called child role model, now at 20, has raised the dander of mothers who have second thoughts about her influence on their daughters. Initially there was some “noise” of criticism, but it didn’t seem to last long. Fifty years ago such a performance would have been utterly taboo, with serious repercussion. But the Madonnas and Lady Gagas have silenced and deadened the consciences of our young people, who are now adults. There’s nothing shocking anymore!
With politicians and religious leaders who blatantly lie through their teeth, what hope is there for our younger generation? We’re bombarded everyday with speeches and platitudes that muddle the waters of truth. There’s no standard anymore, and people are simply doing what is right in their own eyes. An Anthony Weiner insists on running for mayor in New York City, despite his blatant sexual and immoral exposure over the Internet. Evidently, there’s no shame on his part or his supporters.
How far will this perverted thinking go?  The educational tools and conscience-developing teachings of yesteryear are all but lost in the maze of “relativism” and humanism. The moral compass has been changed by an evolutionary religion which makes “truth” whatever you want it to be. The result is confusion, because it counters that “red light” of conscience. Moreover, immorality now becomes the new “morality.”
If the foundation is removed, what house can stand? The last I heard, two plus two still equals 4; some things never change, and are the basis of our human existence. Likewise, there’s a definite distinction between right and wrong. Stealing and adultery are moral sins, never becoming anything else. To build young lives on “relative” precepts, with no absolutes, is an exercise in futility; the results are coming in rapidly, with parents and teachers racking their brains to curb the rising epidemic of rebellion among our children.
If we lose the fight to train the conscience of our youth regarding right and wrong, we can only foster greater personal anarchy and lawlessness in adulthood. Children grow up, and the little problems become big ones. Some “prude” once said, “If we paid more attention to the high chair, we might not have to worry about the ‘electric chair.’”
People don’t usually change drastically, for as adults we are what we have been becoming. Miley Cyrus, and others, are disappointing role models; our children need to be challenged to emulate those who have determined to do right, no matter what the cost. It’s significant that Tim Tebow continues be maintain his convictions amid his football struggles. Lesser men want him to fall, and to compromise his standards. I believe that he is criticized by many who secretly admire him, but are intimidated by his strength of character. His career could be on the line, but so what! Careers and moments of fame come and go, but integrity of character is here to stay.

Killing for Kicks

Killing for ‘Kicks’

The recent travesty in Duncan, Oklahoma, where 3 teens killed a jogger for “kicks” has stirred great controversy. Many are appalled at such a blatant act, especially when knowing that the apparent motive was “boredom.” How could that possibly be? Who would do such a thing? For what valid reason would these young men concoct such a senseless murder?
The media pundants seem to be clueless. The ageless argument of the lack of “gun control” heads the list of liberal reasoning, even though stiff gun laws are well in place. What gun has ever killed anyone apart from a human hand and heart? It’s people that need “self-control,” not the weapons. Then the race card is being played again, which certainly could be a factor from one of the teen’s cell phone records. But the victim being white will keep the “race mongers” like Al Sharpton from making a scene.
Others are more accurately blaming the effect of video games, which are laced with violence and killing. Then there’s the factor of broken homes, lack of parental guidance and values. These are valid concerns, which explain the absence of discipline and standard of right and wrong. The “law” must be laid down at home first, if it’s to be obeyed in society. And still that’s no guarantee that teens will not break it. But this prevalent attitude of “free expression” has been “killing” us! The chickens are coming home to roost---big time. And this is only the tip of the iceberg.
Since throwing out the Bible from public life in the 60s, we have reaped a harvest of selfish, disrespectful, and angry brats. Personal responsibility has been thrown to the wind, in place of doing whatever “makes me happy.” We have created an “entitlement” society where “what’s mine is mine, and what’s yours in mine.”
Getting closer to the root, evolution’s denial of a Creator discards the fact of “sin”, making any abnormal behavior “mental illness.” So now we have children on Ritalin, etc. who are coddled and excused for sinful behavior. Then we wonder why they grow up with no conscience regarding sinful and/or criminal actions. If everyone is “mentally ill,” then no one is guilty of any wrongdoing, for we don’t “lock up” sick people.
Years ago a personal friend worked in a middle-school cafeteria where students were stealing butter patties at lunch time. There was a minimal price posted over the patties, but was disregarded by most. She decided to place another sign alongside, which read, “Thou shalt not steal.” The response to that “sign” (commandment) was phenomenal. Students began to get under conviction about their “crime,” and their conscience helped them come up with the money. This simple illustration speaks volumes. The conscience of young people needs to be trained by the laws of God.
Like it or not, it’s time to face the reality of the human heart (spiritual nature). Our whole judicial system has been based on the Biblical concept of human depravity. Sin is universal and thus every society has some judicial restraint. Police work on this premise every day. The three teens in question are no exception, for their senseless plan to kill Mr. Lane had to be resident in their hearts and minds. Let’s face it, psychology, and the rest of academia, have no valid explanation of the origin of murder.
It was Jesus Christ who said that, “It’s not what goes into a man that defiles him; but rather what comes out of his heart.” (The Bible) Yes, even the consumption of drugs, alcohol, foods, etc. does not go to the heart, but into the stomach, etc. and eventually excreted from the body. He went on to say, that from the heart (nature) proceed “evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, wickedness…pride and foolishness.” That’s not to excuse the hazard of illegal drugs, etc., but to expose the deeper problem of sin that affects all people. Drugs or no drugs, this is the issue that must not be ignored.
The Cross of Christ paid the penalty of that sin (John 3:16), making forgiveness possible by faith. In addition, He made a “new heart” available, cleansed from the old selfish lifestyle. Right now there are three foolish teens that have snuffed out a precious life for “kicks;” they need to face this issue squarely, not only in court, but before a Holy God.

Gambling Addiction on the Rise

If it’s not one thing, it’s another. Our society is increasingly plagued with all sorts of addictions, whether alcohol, drugs (legal and illegal), pornography, tobacco, food, video games, etc., etc. It’s no secret that the human psyche can become addicted to just about anything. It’s not what we control, but what controls us that makes the difference. For instance, there’s nothing wrong with money per/se, but it’s the “love of money” that creates havoc. Most people who love money don’t have it, which makes the lottery and casinos such an insidious temptation. Consequently, gambling has become “big business,” catering to those who out of greed desire to “get-rich-quick.” While very few ever win, the “gambling bug” sets many up for a fall, losing whatever little they had initially. I know people who have gambled away their homes, businesses and their livelihoods. Make no mistake; this menace is on the rise, leaving a trail of devastation behind.
Interestingly, in our state of Ohio, before our four casinos opened, officials were already anticipating the potential epidemic of “problem gamblers.” According to a recent Tribune Chronicle article, just months after these gaming places opened, a multitude of “addicted gamblers” began showing up at state-run treatment centers. Thousands of calls have been received by the “gambling hotline” in the last twelve months. “Hundreds have asked to be banned from all Ohio casinos because they say they cannot stop gambling.” What a travesty!
We have a scenario here where the state wants to gain more revenue through gaming enterprise; yet, the “game” takes advantage of human weakness and temptation, creating havoc in the end. Is this a wise and fruitful means of dropping coins in the state coffer? It’s a shame that such a ploy for funds should be necessary, in light of all the potential destruction of individual lives, families and jobs. Now these addicts will need welfare and psychological “treatment” at the further cost of the state? Does that make sense? Look what’s already happening with the horrific “world” of “legal” alcohol? Do we need more of the same?
This idea that gambling enhances the state revenue and community life is bunk. I lived most of my life in New Jersey, where the casino industry took over Atlantic City in 1973. I witnessed first hand the demise of a once-beautiful shore resort, in spite of the promise to “help the senior citizens.” What a joke! The seniors were pushed out of town, and the area two-blocks from the beach became a slum. The Rescue Mission in town began to mushroom with “clients,” not the typical “bums,” but well-dressed clientele from the casinos; I saw one guy first-hand staggering in the door with vomit stains on his suit; he was crying that his car, wallet, gold watch, etc. had been stolen. Yes, he came with a “roll of greenbacks,” but he got “rolled” (robbed), losing it all! Here the “up-and-outer” needed a meal and a cot along with the “down-and-outers.”
I also understand that the Mission and other agencies received considerable amounts in “donations” from casinos for taking so many addicts off their hands. New Jersey is still in financial trouble, and so are the casinos. Atlantic City was more recently hit hard by the storm Sandy, but it was already in bad shape through the deception and travesties connected with gambling.
Yes, you can lose money investing in Wall Street, but at least you can find a viable, legitimate establishment to hopefully share in its profit as part owner. While life itself is risky in many areas, the risk of pure chance and luck at the gaming table is a price much too high to pay. That “price” must also be considered by the conscience of the casino regarding its effect and influence on its weak and idealistic patrons. This is risky business! There’s got to be a better way to raise state revenue.

Defending Your Home

DEFENDING YOUR HOME

“I just shot through my door with a gun,” a Niles, OH man recently told a police dispatcher. The Tribune Chronicle’s front page story arrested my attention, for this happened just a few miles from my house. Part of the headline was a sign with giant letters, “PROTECTED BY OWNER,” pictured with a hand holding a gun. Under this sign was the caption: “Home is your castle,” which certainly is common knowledge; but what’s the big deal here?
Come to find out that 40-year old Roy Hahn, the caller, didn’t realize that the shotgun blast he fired through his front door had killed one man in the group attempting to break into his home. This incident is one of several examples across the country where deadly force has been used for self-defense; local prosecutors have confronted such cases in the form of “Ohio Castle Doctrine, stand-your-ground or ‘no duty to retreat’ laws.” On this basis, Mr. Hahn was cleared of any wrongdoing by the Trumbull County prosecutor’s office, citing it as a clear case of self –defense. Including Ohio, castle laws are also in effect in at least 48 states.
In this day of judicial breakdown and “political correctness,” I wondered if there might have been a public outcry over this “verdict.” Wouldn’t Hahn be the perpetrator, rather than the victim? This is a feasible question in light of the recent self-defense case of George Zimmerman in Florida where he was acquitted in the death of Travon Martin. The race card was played big time in that scenario; thankfully, that is not a factor in this local case.
But even more amazing was the additional “twist” where the surviving burglary suspects were charged with murder, seeing that their involvement of this felony caused a life to be taken. Yes, those engaged in the burglary attempt were complicit in the death of one of their own. That’s in “the books,” and rightly so---but how bizarre in light of modern thinking. What a weight this law has placed on all concerned! There are some vital lessons here.
Thankfully, in America, our “home is our castle,” if we have one. It’s a place of rest and refuge, a place to escape the rat-race and intrusion of the outside world. It’s really the last resort of a person’s privacy and solitude. No one has the right to violate that space; but unfortunately that doesn’t deter some people from invading the privacy of others.
But increasingly, these personal rights are being violated, even by “Big Brother” with his sophisticated technology and power. Our “land of the free…” is consistently being decimated and challenged. Neighborhood crime continues to escalate especially where the “entitlement” philosophy is mushrooming; this promotes the attitude that “what’s yours is mine,” and sets up further episodes of “stand- your- ground” confrontations as described above. It took a “shotgun” blast through the door to send a clear message from Mr. Hahn that his “home was his castle!”
Certainly there’s a sobering note here, for a man lost his life attempting to break in to someone else’s house. Moreover, the other accomplices will also face stiff consequences as well. In reality, while they broke the law, the law in turn broke them. I’m sure they’ve had second thoughts about their wicked plight. Few would say that the “stand- your- ground” law will not deter some from attempting such unlawful and selfish deeds. Gratefully, the law protects us from such violations; but that’s effective only in a society that promotes respect for authority and sensitivity of conscience. We’re losing those concepts rapidly!
Speaking of the unlawful invasion of a man’s home or castle, how many folks don’t even have a place to call “home.” Yes, there is still an abundance of houses, but there are very few real homes. Traditional marriage seems to be on the decline, while divorce and co-habitation are on the rise. Then consider the epidemic rate of illegitimacy and the plight of single moms who look to government to become the “father” and breadwinner. This has become a colossal heartbreak, impeding the family structure and preventing the wholesome security and beauty of efficient home life. A house is one thing, but a home is another. Men make houses, but only God can make a home.
I’m grateful for “Ohio’s Castle Doctrine” that protects the homeowner’s right to protect himself and his “castle.” However, I have a three-fold concern; first, how long will such laws be enforced in light of the mounting tolerance toward criminal behavior and accountability; second, there’s the growing “progressive’ trend to “take from the haves, and give to the have nots?” Thirdly, with the moral corruption, infidelity, and spiritual bankruptcy that plagues our nation, how many real homes (“castles”) will be left to protect?

We Need to Hear from God

We Need to Hear from God

We’ve heard from everyone else---what about God? Politicians, educators, and pundants of every stripe dominate the air waves, but where are the ol’ time preachers? The public proclamation of Biblical truth is fading rapidly. Chatter fills the atmosphere at unbelievable speed, but what are we talking about? People talk incessantly and say very little. Talking is one thing, but communicating is another. There’s still a difference between having to say something, and having something to say.
People in every walk of life continue to spout their personal propaganda, but what real progress has been made in changing humanity for the better? Yes, medical science and pharmaceutical innovation have helped in battling certain diseases, but what accounts for the growing epidemic of greed, anger, crime, and bankruptcy of character? Especially in America, never have we had so much, and never have we had so little!
Socialists and liberals continue to push for higher taxes and bigger government, which has proven to be a great source of our problems. Detroit has just filed for bankruptcy, the result of Democratic politics, along with a history of corruption, etc. The reality is that no political party has the ultimate answer for saving our nation; it would be refreshing just to hear someone in Washington admit that. But who would ever admit that we are suffering from moral and spiritual collapse, snubbing our proverbial noses at God and His Word? Our president is simply a reflection of our national dilemma, taking advantage of the situation, and setting himself up as an “empty suit” messiah. The liberal press has sworn its allegiance to him and his agenda, with no “change” in sight.
It’s time to hear from God! Our spiritual apostasy and unbelief is catching us with us. This rising trend of government power is slowly killing our freedom. The Bible has already been removed, now the Constitution is being dismantled right before our eyes. Opposition to religious liberty is mushrooming. Not only ministers of the Gospel are being pressured, but military chaplains and public officials are being “gagged” regarding their open allegiance to Jesus Christ. Ironically, Muslims are catered to in their religious practices, while Christians are ostracized. Where are the Elijahs of old?
It’s time to stand up and be counted for Christ, regardless of the consequences! True believers need to “come alive” in this hour while still having the opportunity. Preachers need to stop compromising, and begin to “preach the Word, to be instant in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine (teaching).” Let the testimony of true salvation in Christ be proclaimed by life and by lip!
Genuine spiritual awakening does not begin in the White House, but in the Church house. There’s been a “power failure” in the Christian community, and a divine move of conviction and repentance must invade our lives. There are “pockets of grace” all over our land, small groups of folks who still love truth; therefore, we need to pray: “Revive us again, fill our hearts with Thy love, may our souls be rekindled with fire from above. Hallelujah, Thine the glory; Hallelujah, Amen! Hallelujah, Thine the glory---revive us again!”
When Israel of old was threatened with moral and economic disaster, God said:
“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” (2Chron. 7:14)
For some time now we’ve been hearing from puny, egotistical men; it’s time to once again hear from God!

Exploring the Bullying Epidemic

I recently heard about a “Back to School Bully Buster Bootcamp” held for families at Kyuki-Do Marital Arts in Huntley, Ill. According to Stephanie Hanes, of the Christian Science Monitor, students were trained not only in self-defense moves, but how to stay calm when confronted by a bully; learning what to say, along with other strategic techniques in dealing with bullies, were also part of the training program. An interesting approach!
This problem has become a major dilemma in our society. While confining this article to school-age children, the bullying problem has spread throughout our country, even to governmental tactics. It’s not a surprise that bullying has increased exponentially with the decline of child and student discipline. With schools being riddled with rebellion and lawlessness, it’s no wonder that the bullies are coming out of the “woodwork,” seeing that their criminal behavior goes unchecked. Few in the system have the fortitude to confront them head-on, for fear of reprisal, loss of their job, or a jail-sentence! Sadly, this is how far the debacle has gone.
In the same article, there were included the “Top 5 Bullying Myths: What you don’t know about bullying.”  Myth #1. “Bullies lash out because they have low self-esteem.” This suggests that the bully acts aggressively to compensate for the fact that he doesn’t really like himself. But studies are showing that “Joe bully” is fine with himself, actually having a superior self-esteem (ego), making him feel better than others.
Myth #2. “Zero-tolerance policies against bullying decrease bullying.” The ploy of “zero-tolerance” became popular in the 1990s to deal with the challenges of drug use, violence, and sexual harassment. For all practical purposes, its effect has been a big “zero,” because it had no “teeth” or judicial backing. Supposedly the kids were threatened with suspension, etc. for bullying, but such policies failed to instill godly fear or compassion for other students.
Myth #3. “Technology is the problem. Cyberbullying is the main form of bullying these days.” Certainly the use of cell phone texting makes this activity easier because of the non-confrontation factor; but whether face to face or Online, the principle issue is the same—a selfish and evil aggression toward others. It’s true that texting, etc. facilitates cowardice, and excessive trash talk. But it’s probably an extension of what began face to face, and further facilitates the hostile activity.
Myth #4. “Everyone is equally at risk of falling victim to bullying.” According to researchers, this is not the case. Bullies seem to target children who are “marginalized,” whether because of sexual orientation or disability. This aggression is also directed toward new students who have no friends, and as yet have not developed a more secure social network.
Myth#5. “Bullying is a major cause of suicide and school violence.” While there have been some tragic incidents of bullied children taking their lives, to blame school violence per/se is a bit simplistic and questionable. The media’s coverage of the 1999 Columbine High School shootings fostered the idea that the loner, bullied trigger-men were taking out their anger through violent, murderous acts. It was almost a “justification” for the two shooters, making them appear to be victims, rather than cold-blooded killers.
I commend the above article for its forthright rejection of these “5 Myths.” Unfortunately they did not address the root cause or remedy for bullying. The opening segment did come close to anti-bullying efforts through its “Back to School Bully Buster Bootcamp.” It comes down to self-defense and survival, in a wicked and “politically correct” society, which ignores the evil nature of children. Bullying tendencies begin at home among siblings, and are carried over into the school experience. The lack of family discipline eventually shows up in the classroom, crippling the educational process. Bullies thrive in this environment, and there’s no end in sight.
Sixty years ago, the scenario was quite different. While there were incidents of bullying, it was usually remedied on the playground when a “big brother” came to the victim’s aid. The bully was physically put in his place, never to strike again! Without the thought of using a weapon per/se, the fists were used effectively to drop and stop the aggressor. We put a “hurt” on a bully, but it brought eventual “healing” and peace to all concerned.
The teamwork of parents and teachers also played a vital part in ending this brutality. Parents already had a “zero-tolerance” attitude, and children who misbehaved were dealt with both at home and at school. Even the principal got involved when necessary, applying the “board of education” to the “seat of learning!” O, for the good ol’ days!

Most People Hate to Work

“We need jobs, jobs, jobs,” is the constant political whine of the hour! The unemployment rates, along with new jobs created, are tracked daily. Unemployment is reaching record proportions, which exacerbates the already poor economy. Yes, folks are out of work, but it might be well to consider the reason why. Is it just that jobs are not available? Could the rise of “underemployment” be a contributing factor? This term describes those who have taken a cut in pay because of their company’s attempt to remain solvent. In hard economic times is it too “costly” or unreasonable for a worker to receive a few dollars less per/hr. in order to keep his job?
What about the many jobs that are available, but are overlooked or rejected for various reasons? Is a “flipping hamburger” job too demeaning to anyone needing work? Is it not better to have a minimum wage job, than to be a “couch potato?” Is there not something to be said for the “work ethic” that exists somewhere in the human makeup?
Is it not healthier to labor somewhere, than to live on the welfare handouts? The latter can only promote laziness and low self-confidence, conditions that already plague our society. Could it be that even if the job market exploded, that there would be that many folks interested in work? Jobs, or no jobs, does this generation really want to work? With so many “freebies” handed out by the government these days, does the idea of working for a living still have any widespread appeal? Other than those folks who have moral integrity and healthy ambition, why would anyone want to get off his “backside” and work, when he can maneuver the welfare system for his financial benefit?
Moreover, it’s interesting that “seven out of ten workers” presently employed hate their jobs! According to a recent Gallup survey, only 30 percent of workers “were engaged, or involved in, or enthusiastic about, and committed to their workplace.” The survey classified three types of employees among the 100 million full-time workers in America. The first type, about 30 million, is “actively engaged;” the second type of worker is “not engaged,” accounting for 50 million. These folks are simply going through the motions at work.
The third category is labeled “actively disengaged,” those who hate going to work. This describes some 20 million employees who “undermine their companies with their attitude.” Jim Harter, one of Gallup’s chief spokesmen, states that “the general consciousness about the importance of employee engagement seems to have increased in the past decade.” This is a polite way of explaining the laziness, disinterest, and general bankruptcy of integrity and ambition in the work force. What a sad commentary on a country that once prided itself on character and rugged individualism!
There are even so-called progressives who equate work with the “curse” of capitalism. As though work is a curse! No, work is a gift from our Creator, giving direction, purpose and personal fulfillment to humans for the good of all. Surely sinful greed has done much to deter this lofty goal, but that doesn’t negate the purpose of the God-given desire to work; especially is this true when the “job” lines up with the talent, gifts, and desires of the individual. That’s when the “sweat” is taken out of work, making it a delight, rather than a chore. What a privilege to labor in work that fulfills the soul, while supplying financial stability! Yes, even that kind of job demands physical exertion; but how good it is to get tired in the work, without necessarily getting tired of the work!

Suicide and Hopelessness

Suicides among so-called baby boomers are reaching epidemic proportions, according to a recent Washington Post article. These are the folks born at the end of World War II (1945), and are presently in the retirement range. They (“boomers”) are “killing themselves at an alarming rate, raising the question: Why?”
The writer cites the example of Frank Turkaly, a 63 year-old retiree in Pittsburgh who attempted suicide after tiring of living on disability checks, and being estranged from friends and family; mounting credit card debt led to depression, accompanied by other physical maladies of diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. He said it wasn’t the life he envisioned as a young man, “when people were more in tune with each other; people were more prone to help each other.”
While he regrets his attempt to overdose on tranquilizers, he blames “social isolation.” But unfortunately he is far from alone; he is part of an alarming trend among baby boomers whose suicide rates have “shot up precipitously between 1999 and 2010.” The article suggests that there are no concrete reasons for this increase. The recent economic downturn has some bearing, as it has in other generations. Some psychologists and academics suggest a “complex matrix of issues particular to a generation that vowed not to trust anyone older than 30;” they belted out lyrics like, “I hope I die before I get old.”
Significantly, these folks reached their prime in the Woodstock era (late 60s & 70s) when rebellion was rampant. Heavy metal music and the birth-control pill sparked a sexual revolution. The economy was flourishing, and many young adults embraced new life-styles, like civil rights activists, hippies, feminists, and war protesters. Parental authority and family life were thrown to the wind. People moved across the country, losing family connections and creating weak marital ties. Multiple divorces were not uncommon. Mid-life years were riddled with disillusionment and depression because of anticipated dreams that were thwarted; this new “freedom” proved to be disappointing and unfruitful. What they thought was a new “revelation” of super-existence and success, turned out to be a “bummer,” promoting a “fantasy island” mentality.
This was the era of “change” from which we’ve not recovered. Although not perfect, the social and financial solidarity of the 50s was soon to be lost. The removal of the Bible and prayer from public life had a profound impact on the character and philosophy of our populace, particularly our young people. The moral (or immoral) revolution paid its toll, and the rest is history. The seeds of selfishness and rebellion were sown prolifically, and now the harvest is coming in. The “if it feels good, do it” mentality has led to a dead end!
We were put here for a purpose other than seeking pleasure and wealth. There’s no meaning for life apart from the One who gave it. Every manufacturer supplies a manual with his product. So God gave us a Manual to clue us in on who we are, and how we should function in this world. It also deals with fixing “dysfunction,” and how to prepare for the next life; in turn, that equips us to live now. One intriguing statement it makes is, “What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul” (The Bible).
Just recently a younger Brooklyn couple who hosted a monthly “self-help” radio show, killed themselves in their apartment. Lynne Rosen, 46, and John Littig, 48, committed suicide by “placing plastic bags over their heads and inhaling helium.” Their show was called “The Pursuit of Happiness.”
The reader can make the judgment call here. Did they find or exemplify the “happiness” which they proclaimed? What was their modus operandi, or formula for making it through this treacherous world in a sane manner? What was their definition of “success?” Just asking!
Never have we had so much in our country, and never have we had so little! We can text and talk with others in mini-seconds, even though we have nothing important to say. Never has there been more speaking and less communication. The boomers, and others, have attempted to master their own destinies, rejecting and ignoring the Manual which alone offers purpose and hope. Only a right relationship with our Creator can secure future hope, and thus promote true “happiness” during this earthly journey.

Gay Rights Agenda is Offensive

This entry is a response to a guest editorial in the local Tribune Chronicle in Warren. Mr. Pitts is a typical left-winged columnist, but appears quite militant for "gay rights;" he's intensely advocating complete equality and acceptance of the gay lifestyle by everyone. I'm taking issue with their proud and militant agenda, making those of us who oppose this sinful lifestyle appear to be a bunch of "hate-mongers."
To embrace God's ordained role of the sexes is not unkind; nor does it indicate any hatred for those who reject God's revealed plan. We love people period! However, we don't have to embrace a person's lifestyle to prove that love. Sin is sin, regardless of one's sexuality. The fight is on! This issue will not go away.

Letter to the Editor:

You recently ran an article by Leonard Pitts regarding the shooting of a gay man in New York. The inference was that it was a “hate crime” simply because of the man’s sexual orientation and his location near an infamous gay bar. While there’s no justification for the shooting, why was that any more a hate crime than blacks shooting blacks in our major cities?  Murder is taking a life unjustifiably, regardless of ethnicity or sexuality, etc. No homicide is a “love” crime, but a selfish disregard for the gift of life. Even abortion demonstrates a lack of love and reverence for a new life and the God who gave it. While abortion may be “legal,” that doesn’t make it any less immoral.
Mr. Pitts also encourages the intimidating tactics of the gay community. Declaring their “gayness” is not enough; rather they should be entitled to publicly flaunt their brand of sexuality, as do heterosexuals. Open expressions of “love” should not be denied or castigated. Pitts fails to face the fact that such outward behavior is offensive and unnatural to those with a moral compass. By the way, all public sexual promiscuity of any kind is still unlawful.
Significantly, this article ran on the heels of the Boy Scout’s new policy of accepting gay boys into the program. This has created a widespread furor among those who still believe in the Scout Oath, which includes being “morally straight.” If gay is a third “sex” then why not start the “Gay Scouts,” and leave the rest our boys and girls alone?
As Pitts says, “gay rights have become more approved,” but that doesn’t make it a legitimate lifestyle; especially if one believes the Biblical account of God’s creation of Adam and Eve. Obviously Pitts has joined the ranks of those pushing the gay agenda, and intimidating all those who refuse to embrace the deception of evolution. You’re free in American to be “gay,” but to push it down our throats, and labeling opponents as “homophobes,” is unacceptable and offensive. This can only bring further turmoil and confusion to our nation, and an eventual ideological “war,” which has nothing to do with “civil rights.”
